I watched a video by Mayim Bialik describing her experience with a two week digital detox. With vacation coming, I think putting aside a time block each day where we aren’t allowed to work with any electronics will put us on a different path with this coming year.

We have some lofty goals. We have to be a group of more serious people. Not serious in the “no fun” way, serious in the we need to be more productive to do any of the bullshit on my goals lists.

Today’s Topic: A Digital Detox

I’m not sure if my family will agree to this. I don’t want to feel like I’m bullying them into it. I’m going to do it regardless because I’d rather punish myself this way than to tally up all the hours I watch my stories and play my games. I’m not even sure I enjoy any of it anymore.

So, at first glance, I will request that we won’t be on any electronics from 11 am through 3 pm during the first week. And then the second week, we’ll push it form 11 am to 7 pm. I miss my family. There are so many projects we’d enjoy outside- the dogs would benefit greatly, the wildlife would benefit in dramatic ways, and our health would begin a cleansing process (Dr. Berg is still on my damn shitlist.)

Public Service Announcement

While I was typing today’s post, our internet went out for about ten minutes. I’m thinking that’s a sign that I’m on the right track. We certainly had the response of addicts and we need to be better than that. I refused adding to the chaos by allowing Brian to pick up dinner and paid the month behind cable bill instead.

… and Now Back to Regularly Scheduled Programming

Our days would be exceedingly different if we weren’t all chained to separate devices. Hell, maybe we even have a few instances where we’re all utilizing the SAME devices… vacation family movies anyone? I look forward to evaluating this with my sane family members (I’m looking at you, Liz) to come up with a plan of interaction, business planning, and home beautifying that we can complete over the two weeks of controlled device time. I will now duck and cover because this is the introduction to my family on the topic.

September Projects

I took the time a few days ago to choose projects that, when complete, will really add to the quality of life, streamline our production, and really make a difference. I figured we have four adults, so I chose four projects that I’ve had my eye on for awhile.

  1. Create the dog yard so we can enjoy fall on this land we pay so much mortgage on.
  2. Utilize my reference book and create a system to get it up to date each week.
  3. Discuss, decide, practice, and finalize our time blocks.
  4. Create card files that support our daily routines and our collections.

Considerations

  • What will we do?
  • How can we reconnect?
  • What projects do we look forward to being done?
  • Will our routines and plans get worked out better due to the extreme reduction in distractions?

Penny For Your Thoughts?

How would you implement something like this for yourself and your family? Would they revolt? Would some quality matricide or patricide be on the agenda? Let me know how you would handle a three-day power/internet outage.
